Kelowna RCMP officer pleads not guilty to assault

Doris Janssen (CHBC News) – A Kelowna RCMP officer accused of two separate assaults was back in a Kelowna court Tuesday to enter a plea on one of the charges.

Cst. Geoff Mantler pleaded not guilty in the assault case involving the arrest of Manjeet Singh Bhatti.

Mantler is also charged with an assault that was caught on video last January. Buddy Tavares is seen being kicked as he lowers his body to the ground while on his knees with his hands behind his head.

Mantler’s lawyer, Neville McDougall, asked for more time to go through evidence provided by Crown Counsel.

The cases have been adjourned for another three weeks.

Mantler remains suspended from his job without pay.
