Funds cut for police agency

(Edmonton Journal) – A little-known but key agency that reviews complaints from Mounties if they feel they’ve been unfairly demoted, discharged or disciplined is at risk of disappearing as it grapples with a decreasing budget, leaving some officers worried.

“To see that body being cut in funding, when it was never even appropriately funded, places the (officers) in a position where their access to a sober second thought is at best delayed, and at worst eliminated all together,” said Staff Sgt. Abe Townsend, national executive with the RCMP Staff Relations Program, which represents members of the force.

At the start of 2009-10 there were 60 cases pending before the review committee, and 46 by the end of the year, according to the department’s report.

  1. It would be prudent to keep this around. Axe it and the force will have a stronger union push.

Hot debate. What do you think? Thumb up 10 Thumb down 7
